TULA: A Leader in the Rise of Specialty Marketplaces

When discussing modern service marketplaces, companies such as Uber, TaskRabbit, and Instacart are those that come to mind. However, the conversation on marketplace models is evolving as we deviate from singular tasks like grocery shopping and ride sharing and lean towards community based servces. As consumer demand becomes increasingly segmented, the marketplace model is evolving to meet the specific needs of distinct user groups.

According to a 2024 report by the Boston Consulting Group, the success of emerging platforms lies in their ability to serve clearly defined customer segments (Boston Consulting Group, 2024). These specialty marketplaces do not aim to reach every consumer, but rather to provide tailored value to smaller, more focused demographics. This allows them to differentiate from mass-market platforms.

The homecare and personal assistance segment is undergoing a similar transformation. Beyond traditional services such as food delivery or furniture assembly, companies like TULA Life Balanced are introducing a more comprehensive model of in-home and virtual support. TULA offers vetted personal assistants and chefs who provide help with travel planning, home management, errands, laundry, grocery shopping, mail handling, and more.

A 2023 study from Pew Research Center, reported that, women in heterosexual couples spend an average of 4.6 hours more per week on caregiving and housework than their male partners. These outdated standards are long overdue for change. That’s where platforms like Jam come in: helping create systems that support gender role diversity and equitable outcomes. This approach reflects a broader trend toward outsourcing the “second shift”—the often-unpaid domestic labor that falls outside of traditional working hours (TULA Life Balanced, n.d.).

TULA offers in-person services in several U.S. cities, including Denver, Boulder, Austin, Raleigh-Durham, Billings, Richmond, Scottsdale, and Aspen. In addition to these regional offerings, the company provides virtual support nationwide, allowing clients to access services remotely.

By blending convenience with personalized service, TULA represents the next stage in the development of the marketplace economy, one focused not just on singular task resolution, but also on a disruption on the gig economy and how we view the future-of-work in general.
