Potty Training: Let's take them out
When you get started with stage 3 of potty training, take your child to their potty as soon as they wake. Continue to make your child wear loose, baggy clothes, dresses or skirts, just don't make them wear underwear yet as they will feel that an underwear is just like a diaper and will avoid going to use the potty. Follow your normal routine for the day and wait for your child to do their first pee of the day whether in the potty or they have an accident. Now let's add something new to the mix. After 2 whole days holed up in your house it's time to take your little one for a short trip outside for 5- 10 mins tops. Let's not push our luck.
You can take them outside:
To go get the mail,
pick some flowers from the garden
take your dog for a walk for a short walk
Once you sense them starting to get comfortable and without accidents you can start increasing the time period to 15 - 25 mins. Now you can
Go to the park
Water the plants in the garden
Take a stroll in the neighborhood.
Always remember not to pressurize your child for anything. Take your toddler potty with you when you go for these short outings like put the potty in the yard or in your car trunk if you are heading to the neighborhood park. Your child has become used to using their potty so they will look for it when they have to use it to pee or poop as you don't want to add the additional pressure of using the public restroom. When you start taking them out for longer periods of time make sure you are well prepped.
Carry an extra pair of clothes
Babies wipes
Snacks and water
Their jacket
Shoes
OF COURSE the POTTY.
Eventually you will be able to start increasing your time outside with your child with fewer accidents and them being able to understand the feeling of wanting to pee and poop and telling you they need to use the potty or going to use it all by themselves. Give them and yourself the time and opportunity to learn this new skill in a stress free environment. Also every child has a different time frame of being able to learn new things so don’t get worked up if they are taking longer than what you had expected. Keep promoting them, reminding them about where their potty is and to use it when they feel the need to pee or poop.
